Giving Thanks

Here I am coming out of the my cloak of invisibility, sorry about my absence…so what’s brought this on? Thanksgiving of course.

thanksgiving the perfect wife

I have always been intrigued by the American tradition of Thanksgiving, the story and history behind the traditions, the wonder of sweet potato and marshmallow and the delightfulness of Pumpkin Pie!

give thanks thanksgiving the perfect wife

So here I am jumping on the bandwagon, I won’t be cooking up a turkey tonight or having the family round for a celebration but I will take today to think about what I am thankful for, I’ll even share a few with you:

  • A hot cup of tea in a thermal mug on the way to work and the considerate loving husband who made it for me
  • Skype for keeping a good friend who is far away closer
  • Encouraging, supportive friends and family

I could write a list as long as my arm but I’ll not bore you with all of them, I’ll take some time today and write a little list for me to look back on. Care to tell me a few things you are thankful for?

Lots and lots of love and thanks

A joy of pregnancy

Everyone tells you about the joys of pregnancy – glowing skin, shiny hair, nails in great condition – it all sounds great but I’ve yet to experience them! I have however experienced one of the not so well advertised joys of pregnancy – the pregnancy massage and boy is it a joy! I was lucky enough to be invited along to Nicholas Graham Aveda Concept Salon in Bangor, Co. Down, last Saturday morning to experience their pregnancy massage. It was possibility the best Saturday morning of my pregnancy!

So, what’s it all about? Well, this particular massage was an Aveda pregnancy massage so after being introduced to my therapist, the lovely Leah, I was treated to a foot massage and exfoliation. Leah explained that Aveda, the range of products used by the salon believe that treatments should start with the feet and finish at the scalp, meaning that after I had my massage I would receive an Indian head massage – could it get any better?

Before I get started on the massage I must make comment about the frankly GORGEOUS decor in the treatment room. Styled by Nicholas Graham’s wife, Andrea, you are instantly transported to a world of calm – think soothing candles and hues of grey and brown! Oh, and I cant not mention the carpeted wall! Amaze!

So what is a pregnancy massage? Basically, it’s a full body massage but rather than lie on your back you lie on your side with a strategically placed pillow to rest your bump on. Leah, my therapist, really put me at ease as she talked me through the massage and asked me to choose my favourite aroma from three. I went for ylang ylang which Leah then used throughout the massage.

The massage lasted just over an hour and was so relaxing. Leah has a real talent – the pressure she used was just perfect for me! I have to admit I nearly fell asleep wrapped up in the cosy fleecy blanket she covered me in. It was so nice to feel the knots in my back and shoulders easing under Leah’s expert touch.

As Leah had advised the massage was finished with an Indian head massage – this is a particular favourite of mine so I was in heaven. I was then left to relax for 5 minutes under the afore mentioned fleecy blanket – pure bliss.

So that’s how I spent my Saturday – I wonder if they will have me back this Saturday?! I really can’t recommend Nicholas Graham Aveda Concept Salon enough – and in particular the lovely Leah. if you are interested in checking out the salon you can visit their website. My pregnancy massage was priced at £45 so it’s quite a treat but for those of you who have experienced or are experiencing the tiredness and aches and pains of pregnancy you will understand just how amazing it was to lie back and completely chill while a talented lady works her magic on you!

And finally, I’d just like to wish Leah all the very best for her wedding day this Sunday!!

Lots of love

The Perfect Tan

It’s one of our fav times of the month – when we hand over the reigns of our lovely blog to the gorgeous Chloe Curran from Rose Retreat, who shares with us the best tips from the beauty industry! Today Chloe is talking about The Perfect Tan. I for one can’t wait to hear what she has to say as my skin is definitely looking pale and pasty as November approaches!

It’s that time of year were the leaves fall and the sun is shy, we are all in the quest of the ultimate sunless tan. This blog will explain everything you need to know about self tanning - how it works? Why it smells? How long it lasts? Which tan is for my skin? How can I get an even colour? How do I get it off? Where do I apply it?

How it works?

Okay, this is the science part. For a fake tan to be a fake tan they ALL include the essential active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a colourless sugar that’s often derived from sugar beets or sugar cane. When applied to the skin, it reacts with the amino acids in the skin’s very top layer (i.e. the dead skin surface layer) turning it brown in colour giving the appearance of a tan.

Which tan is for my skin?

Everybody has the dilemma of which tan to use. People often go on recommendations from friends, what looks good on an advertisement or simply value for money. All tans, whether it be gradual or full strength tanners, have different levels of  DHA concentrations. They range from about 1-15%. Gradual self tanners contain low percentages letting you build your tan over several days, while the full strength tans give you a darker tan in one go as their DHA levels are much higher.

Why It Smells?

The first thing that comes to mind when talking about tan is that “smell”. Men hate it, women learn to tolerate it! Unfortunately, the smell is caused by the key ingredient, DHA, reacting with your skin so there’s no getting away from it! Some tans on the market have tried to mask this DHA smell with added fragrances, but usually an unscented tan is better as sooner or later the DHA odour will sneak in.

How Long It Lasts?

Since DHA only reacts with the very top layer of your skin, your fake tan will only last for 2-5 days, until your skin naturally exfoliates itself (or you scrub it off). If your tan happens to last longer, it’s not due to a better tan – it’s just because your body has held on to that top layer of skin a tad longer.

How can I get an even colour?

Firstly ensure your skin is prepped with body scrub / polish / loafer – whatever your chosen method!!  Do your hair removal before hand – waxing the day before, shaving the night before. Do not moisturise your skin on the morning of the tan. Do not put deodorant on either. The moisturiser and deodorant create a barrier on the surface of the skin so the tan will not take.

Do apply a thick barrier cream or coco butter to hands, elbows, knees, ankles and feet. These areas are more prone to rough and hardened skin where the tan will take too much leaving you with dark patches! (Remember the DHA loves dry, dead skin!)

Apply the tan with an APPLICATION MITT! This is the keyif you want a perfect tan!

How do I get the tan off?

It depends mainly on your skin & which tan you have chosen – some will naturally fade in colour, whilst others stay on in patches wearing off very unevenly. There are steps to getting a tan off easily and cost effectively, so you don’t have to run out and buy the best exfoliators. If you have a body brush, brush the skin before you shower when you start to notice the tan coming off or you no longer need the tan on.

If you don’t have a body brush use a SUGAR SCRUB (not a salt scrub). The grain of salt can just glide off the skin and you never get to actually exfoliate the skin. Sugar scrubs are better as they are a smaller grain and give you plenty of time to ensure you exfoliate everywhere. They are also less messy! Do this on DRY skin until you feel a warmth on your skin. (Be careful when rinsing in the shower as most sugar scrubs contain oils to nourish the skin. This causes your shower tray to be very slippery. My husband swears by CIF on the shower tray when he’s cleaning – yes, he is the perfect husband!!)

Lastly, if you don’t have a body brush or sugar scrub and you want to use the simple, free method…. Here it is! After you have showered and the skin is still soaking wet take the roughest, untumbled dried towel you can find and scrub the skin with that. Then rinse the skin so the dead skin cells are well rinsed off! This is the method I swear by! The great thing is you can repeat it over and over again until the tan is fully off! And it costs nada!

Where do I apply it?

A fake tan is meant to look natural! Many of us may forget this and over tan getting a bit tangoed to say the least! I know in my younger years I could have passed for a different ethnicity. But now I have found the key – less is more when it comes to being bronzed!

When your applying tan think of your skin when it has been naturally tanned. Brown hands not palms, brown forearms not wrists, brown feet not soles. Never ever have I seen a brown armpit naturally so why would you apply a fake tan to these areas?!

What tans I feel are best and for what occasion and skin

Everyday gradual tan (great for wanting to look tanned but very natural, good for a long term tan)

Expensive – St Tropez Gradual Moisturiser (£26.00)

Cheap – Johnstons Gradual Mousturiser (£4.99)

Both of these gradual tans come in light-medium and medium-dark. My advice is to go for the light-medium otherwise you get a build up.

Full strength tan (if you are planning a night out or going to a wedding - looks great but more short term)

Expensive – Sun Xpress Liquid (£18.00)

Cheap – St Moritz Mousse (£3.49)

Both liquid sand mousse are fast drying and faultless to apply. My advice, again go for the light-medium otherwise you get a build up.

Instant tan (for when you have a light layer of tan and want to look darker or have no tan on and want instant colour)

Expensive – Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs (£9.99)  **my personal favourite**

Cheap – Rimmel Sun Shimmer (£4.99)

Avoid medium colour in Sally Hansen as it has a pink undertone and looks more like sun burn. Tan and deep are both lovely tones. If you have no tan on go for tan and if you have a base tan, use deep.

As for Sun Shimmer, all shades are good but again use light if you have no base and use a darker shade if you have a base.

Both instant tans are brilliant for covering red thread veins and even cellulite!Winner!

(Please note all prices are approximate and based on my local chemist prices. Prices will vary depending on where you shop.)

So that’s it ladies. Now you can look bronzed without that winter holiday! Have you tried a tan not mentioned in the blog or do you have a special tanning technique? Please let us know by leaving a comment! We appreciate the feedback and love to hear from you.

Until next time

Chlo x

Happy Birthday Ikea!

Ikea have been in the UK for 25 years this year and to celebrate they are hosting 25days of fun packed celebrations from 11th October to 5th November, although we are a little late on the bandwagon there are still plenty of activities to get on board with over the half term holiday’s. Check out here for all the details.

ikea 25th birthday the perfect wife

What interests me the most however are the customisation workshops being held in store. I don’t know know if you’ve noticed recently but customisation and upcycling of furniture is huge at the moment. You just need to take a look on Pinterest or around the blogsphere to see some of the fab projects that these crazy creative people come up with.

I’m an avid follow of Ikea hackers and love dandering round the big blue box itself for idea’s and inspiration. I think you’ve guesssed by now that I kind of love Ikea, they do great value, stylish furniture and home furnishings that if needs be you can add your own stamp to. We’ve already had a go at adding our own stamp to a few ikea items, remember Mrs A’s pretty labelled storage jars? (originally from the painted hive)

The Perfect WIfe Decal Labels

Anyhooo back to the workshops.

One of the main workshops is being held on Sunday 4th November and will be hosted by Tasha Copeland of customisation company, Lulabelle’s House. Tasha will be teaching creative ways to make a plain LACK table stand out, how to put a personal mark on a bottle and how an IKEA print can quickly become the backdrop to a tray or storage compartment. The worshop runs from 2pm-4pm, it’s free and all you have to do is turn up. If you have a go at customising you can purchase the item. I’m sold! I’ll be there with bells on.

lulabelle house whitehead

If however you can’t make that workshop there are smaller daily workshops on every day until 5th November. Each day showcases how to customize a different Ikea product. Monday for example is Moppe, these great little desktop drawers, which I have my eye on for storing recipe cards or even my car keys, I have a little shelf in the kicthen crying out for these. The painted hive have a great example of what you can do with it..

moppe customisation ikea hack

Just a little ‘jujjing(yep it’s a real word, I promise didn’t make it up!) and this litle fella could be just as handsome as that loverly stained one. Hey! Maybe I’ve found my Pinterest challange…or is that cheating if you get Ikea to help?

Details of these workshops can be found on the Ikea site and below:

Every Sunday: REGOLIT lamp shade customisation
Every Monday: MOPPE box customisation
Every Tuesday: MALMA mirror customisation
Every Wednesday: IRMA cushion customisation
Every Thursday: LACK table customisation

The Perfect Wedding – Clare and Andrew

It’s wedding time again!

Clare is an old school friend of mine, when her email popped into our inbox I literally squeeled with excitement. It was lovely to catch up on her story so far through her beautiful words and pictures in the post below.

This is one to savour, so I suggest sticking the kettle on, grabbing a ginger nut and settling in for 5 minutes to read through this delicious wedding report. Without further ado, over to Clare ….. Enjoy!

Andy and I met on New Year’s Eve in 2005 at the good old M-Club, this is the one and only time that I have ever chosen to go out on this night….and little did I know I was to meet my future husband! After a few dates, Andy and I fell in love with each other very fast and very deeply, so when he told me he had to move back to England, due to work in May 2007, I was devastated but he asked if I would go with him, so in July of that year I moved over to York to start a new life together.

the perfect wedding sorrento wedding norther ireland

Sadly things didn’t go that smoothly, leading to me moving back to Northern Ireland alone. However after 5 months of not seeing or having any contact with Andy I was still very much missing him and was delighted when he got in contact to wish me happy birthday. We took things very slowly both afraid to say how we were truly feeling but both admitted that we still cared for each other, when Andy went to Afghanistan in 2010 we both had time to really think about things and I can honestly say I’ve never missed anyone as much as I missed him then.  Our contact during that time made us stronger and we both realised we didn’t want to spend any more unnecessary time apart. On his return in February 2011 Andy got a posting back to Northern Ireland much to my delight and we started to properly plan our future together, talking about marriage!the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland

I always had said that if we were ever to get engaged that I would like him to choose the ring himself, but pretty much described the kind of ring I would like…just to give him a helping hand :-) On 28th October last year Andy surprised me by arranging for a taxi to collect me from work but didn’t tell me where I was going, I had no idea what was going on but thought it was an early birthday present. The taxi dropped me off at the Hilton hotel in Belfast, following Andy’s instructions I collected the room key from reception and feeling increasingly nervous made my way to the room. When I got to the suite tea lights lead to and X on the floor, Andy appeared with a huge bouquet of white lilies, my favourite flowers (he actually had been paying attention to all these little details during our time together).  After I got my flowers he led me further into the room where he then showed me a picture of us with the words “Will you marry me?” wrote in Italian, the language of love! I turned around and there was Andy down on one knee holding open the box to a beautiful platinum solitaire emerald cut diamond ring…it fitted perfect and was so elegant! After I swallowed back my tears and said yes, he then took me to James Street South for a lovely meal to celebrate.

the perfect wedding sorrento

After everything we both decided that we didn’t want a long drawn out engagement, we wanted to make the biggest commitment to each other that we could, sooner rather than later. When I was younger I had always imagined the big white church wedding and a reception at Galgorm, but as I’ve got older my views have changed. I realised I wanted as little stress and fuss as possible and that it was about me and Andy making this commitment to each other so decided to have a small and intimate wedding with the people who are closest to us present, as Andy is from England we decided we wanted to go away somewhere that is neutral to us both. After some researching we decided on Italy, I’ve always loved Italy and thought it would be such a romantic setting for a wedding. We spoke with Thomas Cook and the date was set for September 13th 2012, the location: Sorrento. We took the basic wedding package so that all the legal requirements were taken care of by our Thomas Cook wedding planner, but the rest we wanted to arrange ourselves. We got our handmade invites made at Wedding Inspirations in Lisburn, keeping them very simple, we didn’t go for a definite theme but we decided to go with the colour royal blue as it’s my favourite colour and as Andy decided on a grey Hugo Boss suit the colours looked lovely together. As for everything else we just wanted an elegant understated look, we hoped the location would provide the wow factor!

Next on the task list was to find the dress, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted but I knew I wanted it to be strapless and quite simple and of course it had to be quite light weight as we were going abroad. It didn’t take me long to find, it was in the 2nd shop I went to, Naomi Bridal in Ballyclare and Heather couldn’t have been any more helpful! As soon as I tried the dress on I knew it was the one, even though it did indeed have a strap, it was a beautiful Ivory satin and chiffon halter neck dress with Swarovski crystal buttons down the back along the zip, I also had it altered so that the buttons continued right to the end of the train. The bust had a ruched affect and there was some minor crystal detailing on the front that followed through to the back. It was just perfect for the setting of the wedding. I also got my bridesmaid dress, a gorgeous rich blue gown that tied in nicely with the bust detail in my own dress, from the same shop. I got their package deal, which included my veil, shoes and also my headpiece which I was more than happy with and was great value!

the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland

The time from our engagement to the wedding just flew by and before we knew it we were boarding our flight to Naples…wedding dress, suit, rings and passports check and all good to go! We arrived at our hotel The Grand Ambasciator ,which was stunning and located right on the cliffs, 6 days before W day and met the wedding planner to go over final details. I had researched restaurants in the area and the one we decided on was pre-booked for us by the wedding planner in advance to avoid any disappointment, so all we had to do was meet with the manager to arrange our seating plan etc. I had also researched a photographer from the area and booked him myself just from swapping emails. My flowers I arranged once we arrived in Italy; it wasn’t hard to find a florist, there seemed to be one on every corner.
the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland

It was a great build up to the wedding with different members of our families arriving on different days throughout the week, we also had our 2nd hen and stag do’s in Sorrento with our male and female family members…this was an experience in itself! ;-) The night before the wedding Andy stayed with his parents at their hotel and my lovely bridesmaid Ursula stayed with me. When I woke up on the wedding morning my heart sank, the sky was black and there was a thunder storm, all I could do was watch the lightning hit the sea. I couldn’t believe we had come all this way and the weather was so bad, especially when it had been so nice the days before. However I decided not to let it spoil my day and after all it was out of my control. However, apparently a wet bride in Italy is good luck! Ursula and I did each other’s hair, we had a trial before we left for Italy at Karma Hair Design in Ballyclare and practised a few times before we went. I decided on simple messy up-do’s for us both which wasn’t too time consuming. We also did our make-up ourselves, again having a trail before we went to Italy with Mac, they showed us exactly what to do.

the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland

My dad came to the hotel to collect me and we made our way to the venue, the wedding took place at 12 o’clock at the Cloister’s of San Francesco , as I entered, the chiming of the cathedral bells rang out, it was perfect. The ceremony was performed in Italian with our wedding planner translating it all to English, we had a violinist playing throughout the ceremony which was just beautiful. We decided to write our own vows, which I feel made it so personal to us; this was also the point where we both struggled to hold back the tears.
the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland

Despite the rain we braved it and went to different areas around Sorrento for photos, and even managed to get Mount Vesuvius in the backdrop of a few.We then went to O’Parruchiano restaurant for our meal, the service and food there was fantastic and the setting was amazing and really blew us and our guests away! The way they set the table was gorgeous and very elegant just what I had hoped for, we had bought our favours in Italy as little keepsakes for our guests, fans for the ladies and little bottles of limoncello for the men. The restaurant even provided us with a traditional Italian wedding cake, again this was gorgeous…I even asked for the recipe! It was a lovely intimate meal with all of us seated around one large oval table, with Andy and I seated at the head of it. The speeches all went down a treat and I even had a few unexpected speeches from my uncles; which was entertaining!
the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland

the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland
Our final stop was The Foreigners Club, a venue that we choose to go for some cocktails and to watch the sunset, followed by some live music and dancing…it was the perfect end to the perfect day! Andy and I both agreed it turned out to be so much more than we could have ever hoped for! We stayed on in Italy for a further week for our Honeymoon and enjoyed every minute from our sight-seeing (the Amalfi drive is one of the most romantic things we have ever done…stunning) to the food and wine and of course the warm hospitality of the Italians!the perfect wedding sorrento northern ireland
Our celebrating wasn’t quite over yet, when we arrived home we had a post-wedding party at the Templeton hotel on Friday 28th September. We decided on this as we only had a small number of guests with us in Italy and we knew there were a lot of people who would have loved to been there with us, also it was another excuse for us to dress up in our wedding clothes; getting to wear your wedding dress twice is always a bonus! The Templeton were fantastic and the room looked great, the buffet was lovely. We had our own wedding cake here and went for cupcakes as this doubled up as favours for our guests, this was made by Cakes by Suzanne. We had about 80 guests at the party and really focused on the fun aspect and making sure everyone had a fun night. We had a DJ to get everyone warmed up and then a live band afterwards, the dance floor was full for most of the night. I liked the idea of sweetie buffets so made a DIY one myself which went down a treat and as well as putting disposable cameras on the tables we also hired a photo booth from Photo Booth Angels…which we certainly made the most of and it was a great way to have memories of the night!

the perfect wedding photobooth angels northern ireland

So here we are now just over a month married and it still just feels like yesterday, I can honestly say it was the best day of my life and I wouldn’t have changed it for the world, Looking at our photos makes me feel so proud of what we achieved together and happy that we decided to do it our way and have our big day abroad! the perfect wedding sorrento northern irelandWe’ve just moved into our new home and are at the start of a very exciting journey together with many new life changing events ahead of us and I can’t wait. I love the fact that I can now finally call myself someone’s wife but I’m happier to be able to call Andy my husband! To me being the perfect wife means being supportive of my husband in everything he does, being his friend and confidante, learning to communicate and compromise, it’s about not taking him for granted and cherishing every moment we spend together because life is not made up of one single moment, it’s made up of lots of moments good and bad, it’s about learning more and more about each other every day and enjoying each other’s company, encouraging your love for each other to grow and deepen with each new moment you share! I feel so happy to call myself Mrs Boothman and I’ll continue to try to become the perfect wife in whatever way I can and hopefully one day we’ll become the perfect parents together!

Tuck In Tuesday

Time for Tuck In Tuesday! What’s on the menu? Well, this week we are tantalising your taste buds with something a little japanese / asian – not quite sure which it actually is as Mr A made it up one day a few years back and we both feel head over heels in love. It’s marinated pork tenderloin with pak choi and noodles….

Tuck In Tuesday Chorizo and Orzo Soup

So first up, you will need the following:

Pork tenderloin

1 bottle of teriyaki sauce

a good glug of soy sauce

1 red chilli, finely sliced (I keep the seeds in, but you can choose depending on how spicy you like it)

a thumb sized piece of ginger, finely sliced

5 garlic cloves

pak choi

noodles

Method:

1. Place the pork tenderloin in an oven proof dish and cover with the full bottle of teriyaki sauce. Add the soy sauce the chilli, the ginger and 4 of the garlic cloves. Leave to marinade overnight, turning occassionally.

2. Preheat the oven to 170oC (fan) and cook the marinated tenderloin for around 2 hours (until the marinade has gone sticky).

3. Meanwhile finely chop the remaining garlic clove and wok fry the pak choi and garlic together with a splash of sesame seed oil.

4. Cook your noodles as per the pack instructions (it will depend whether you are using dry or fresh noodles).

5. Once all the elements are ready, slice the tenderloin and place on a bed of noodles and pak choi.

Be warned – this dish is extremely rich but really is to die for.

Hope you enjoy! Don’t forget to drop back and let us know if you give this a go!

Lots of love

Mrs A

A New Addition…

We are kicking off this week with a rather big announcement! You may have noticed I disappeared for quite some time, only posting again in the past 2 weeks. Well, I know I told you things at home were busy, but that’s not quite true. I was struggling to keep my eyes open and my dinner down… yes, I was going through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy – I’m having a baby!! Yaaay!!

I’m 15 weeks gone tomorrow and all I can say is it’s FLYING by!! Part of me wants to press a big pause button as I’m loving being pregnant and want to enjoy every second – but if I pressed pause I wouldn’t get to meet my little chick in 25 weeks – that’s 16 April 2013 for those of you who aren’t great at Maths. I’ve been pretty lucky and had a relatively easy pregnancy – the first 12 weeks I felt like I had a constant hangover and the tiredness was pretty intense but I have heard horror stories of vomiting from morning to night so I’m thankful that wasn’t me. I’ve definitely hit the “blooming” stage in the past 2 weeks – I’m not sure I look blooming but I’m full of energy and feeling great! And my bump has appeared which makes my heart swell every time I look down.

We had a second scan last week and saw our little of bundle of joy kicking and jumping – we even saw it’s fingers and toes. I am completely head over heels in love already in a way I didn’t know possible! It’s just amazing, and so nice to hear that all is well in there!

So, a whole new chapter begins for me. My day is now full of thoughts of nursery furniture and maternity dresses and my dreams are of tiny feet in little booties and a button nose I will kiss all day.

Image souce

There’s so much I plan to do around the house before the big arrival – I have a serious case of nesting and I love it! I’m also taking a leaf out of the lovely Hollie’s book over on Tulips and Tea and having a date night with the man once a week (or maybe once a fortnight) to make sure we don’t get too obsessed with all things baby and forget to make time for ourselves.

But apart from that I think I’m going to sit back and enjoy every little second of this magical time. Oh, and try not to think about the birth until it’s too late.

Lots of baby and bump love

TPW Reviews – Marks and Spencer’s Beauty

I’ve heard great things about Marks and Spencer’s beauty products, reviews from here tickeld my nosey bone, so I had check it out.

When I ran out of my usual make up  a few weeks ago I stopped off at Marksies on my lunch a and picked up this….

And now I’m hooked!

It’s really very lovely make up and does last all day. My usual make up was Mac which I found left me feeling very oily at the end of the day where as this one doesn’t at all. Marksies rate it as a medium to full coverage, I would agree it’s more on the meduim coverage which is perfect for me. Did I tell you one of the best parts it’s £12!

With my new found confidence in Autograph’s offerings I have purchased a few other items which have all exceeded my expections.

Treats For The Perfect Halloween Party

Planning a Halloween party? Need some inspiration for yummy treats? Well look no further! I know Tuesday is our day for sharing recipes but today I’m sharing three quick recipes which are just perfect for Halloween nibbles.

I found these recipes in my fav magazine – Good Ideas! It is quite literally what it says on the tin – a magazine full of good ideas! I can only ever find it in M&S but I’m sure it’s available in good newsagents! I highly recommend it!

Now on with the show… first up on the menu, the all time Halloween favourite, toffee apples! They are what Halloween is all about and I sure as hell love them. You will need toffee apple sticks for these which you can get from Amazon, £2.99 for 15. So, here’s how…

Put 225g (8oz) caster sugar into a small pan and add 125ml (4fl oz) water. Heat gently to dissolve completely, stirring occassionally. Add 1tbsp white wine vinegar and a small knob of butter, and boil the mixture for about 10 minutes until it turns a deep caramel colour. If using a sugar thermometer, it should 170oC (HAWT!). Take extra care when boiling sugar at this temperature! Meanwhile, push a stick halfway into the stalk end of the apple and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. When the toffee is ready, carefully dip your apples, one at a time, turning to coat them, then put on the parchment on the baking sheet and leave to harden. This reciepe makes enough toffee to coat 4 apples. Eat on same day!

Now, for something savoury to warm you up while watching the fireworks, spicy pumpkin wedges…

Preheat oven to 200oC (180oC fan). Peel and trim a whole medium sized pumpkin (or you can use butternut squash). Next, halve through the stem and scrape out and discard the seeds. Halve each piece as if cutting through the equator of the pumpkin, then slice into large wedges. Put the wedges onto a roasting tin with 1tsp of crushed coriander, 1tsp of fennel seeds, a large pinch of chilli flakes and 3tbsp olive oil. Add lots of salt and pepper and roast for 30 minutes. Turn halfway through until pumpkin is tender.

Finally, the last treat for your Halloween party – toffee popcorn! What is it with toffee and Halloween – they are like sausage and mash, salt and pepper! Just go hand in hand… yum! Don’t tell your dentist you heard it here though!

Heat 1tbsp oil over a high heat in a large, deep pan. Add 100g corn kernels, stir and put on a tight fitting lid. When the corn starts to pop, shake the pan to encourage all the kernels to pop without scorching. Set aside. Melt 100g butter, 100g brown sugar and 4tbsp golden syrup in a separate large pan. Bring to the boil and leave to bubble for 3-5 minutes. Add the popcorn and toss to coat. Spread on parchment paper and leave to cool.

And there you have, three quick and easy tasty Halloween treats to keep your guests happy on Halloween night!!

Who’s throwing a Halloween bash this year? What are your fail safe Halloween recipes?

Lots of love
